The North Face History

by Administrator | post a comment

The North Face is named for the coldest, most unforgiving side of a mountain. But The North Face legend begins, ironically, on a beach. More precisely, San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood, at an altitude of only 150 feet above sea level. It was here in 1966 that two hiking enthusiasts resolved to follow their passions and founded a small mountaineering retail store.
Soon thereafter, that little shop became known as The North Face, a retailer of high-performance climbing and backpacking equipment. In 1968, The North Face moved to the other side of San Francisco Bay, to the unbridled possibilities of the Berkeley area, and began designing and manufacturing its own brand of technical mountaineering apparel and equipment.
Through the 1970s, The North Face brand cherished a following amongst avid outdoor athletes and began sponsoring expeditions to some of the most far-flung, still largely untouched corners of the globe. This launched a proud tradition which continues in full force today and constantly reinforces The North Face mantra, Never Stop Exploring.
By the early 1980s, The North Face was taking exploration to the outer limits of the ski world, adding extreme skiwear to the product offering. These were the days of pastels, neons, hair dye, and mohawks; they laid the groundwork for today's free-spirited snowsports athletes. By the end of the decade, The North Face became the only supplier in the United States to offer a comprehensive collection of high-performance outerwear, skiwear, sleeping bags, packs and tents.
The 1990s ushered in an era during which The North Face further broadened the outdoor world it helps athletes to explore. The decade saw our debut in the sportswear market with the launch of Tekware, an innovative collection designed to provide rock climbers, backpackers, hikers, trail runners, and outdoor enthusiasts with the ultimate fit and function. The North Face half dome logo began to appear with greater regularity on ultramarathon courses, high-country trails, and big walls. And, as the calendar clicked toward a new millennium, The North Face launched its own line of trekking and trail-running shoes to ultimately address the head-to-toe needs of those always striving for the next horizon.
Now, more than 40 years after its humble grand opening, The North Face delivers an extensive line of performance apparel, equipment, and footwear. We push the boundaries of innovation so that you can push the boundaries of exploration. We remain deeply proud to be the first choice of the world's most accomplished climbers, mountaineers, extreme skiers, snowboarders, endurance runners, and explorers.
The North Face will maintain an unwavering commitment to pushing the limits of design, so that you can push your limits outdoors. Never Stop Exploring.

The North Face: style and sustainability

by Administrator | 1 comments

The North Face producing outdoor clothing, footwear and equipment engaged Chen Design Associates to launch a global redesign of its product hang tag and packaging system.
The hang tag and packaging system of The North Face didn't communicate what the company values and represents: technological leadership in the outdoor industry and efforts toward greater environmental sustainability in its business practices.
Unveiled in Spring 2008, all outdoor clothing, footwear and equipment, such as tents and sleeping bags, will be re-branded with the new innovative system, in four different languages, which utilizes high percentages of post-consumer content and soy-based inks.

North Face isn't amused by 'South Butt' parody

by Administrator | 13 comments

ST. LOUIS Parody or piracy? That's the question raised by a lawsuit filed by The North Face Apparel Corp. against a small company started by a teenager that calls itself The South Butt. The lawsuit filed earlier this month in U.S. District Court in St. Louis seeks unspecified damages and asks the court to prohibit The South Butt from making, marketing and selling its parody product line of fleece jackets, T-shirts and shorts. The South Butt was started two years ago by now-18-year-old Jimmy Winkelmann, partly to help pay for college. It puts out products with the tag line ""Never Stop Relaxing,"" a parody of The North Face line, ""Never Stop Exploring."" The North Face , a San Leandro, Calif.-based division of VF Corp., first threatened legal action about two months ago. News of the dispute caused sales of The South Butt products to take off, said Albert Watkins, the attorney for The South Butt and Winkelmann.

The North Face jackets (Free Thinker, Sedition II, and more)

The North Face Free Thinker, Foil Thermal, and Sedition II jackets are so cool looking that it almost doesn't matter how well they perform in the cold. But they do. Ah, they do. I will admit that when I started to do these ski technology reviews, I figured it would be hard to distinguish between the different manufacturers. A coat is a coat, right? Wrong. That's like saying Macs and PCs are the same because both use processors and hard drives. It's very easy to pick out a North Face jacket from other brands, and it has nothing to do with the logo. We evaluated several jackets from the North Face : Free Thinker, Foil Thermal (women's), Sedition II, and Wavy Triclimate (women's). The four jackets are very different from each other, and highly distinguished from anything else we tried. Take the North Face Free Thinker jacket, for example, which was my favorite of the bunch.

by Administrator | 1 comments

Three water repellent PrimaLoft filled bags are launched by The North Face this year. The three bags, named Pyxis, Orion and Scorpio, are ultra-lightweight and very compressible so easy for hauling around with you on the move. They are also great for all weathers so should you get caught in a summer downpour the PrimaLoft insulation in The North Face bags will keep you warm and dry. It's no fun being chilly in your sack when trying to sleep which is why The North Face has used PrimaLoft synthetic fibres in its new range of summer sleeping bags. The warmer Pyxis and Orion bags will keep you toasty even if temperatures dip below zero at night and costs 155 for the regular length Pyxis and135 for the Orion. Costing 115 for the regular length, the Scorpio is perfect for use in milder conditions and will keep sleepers warm to 9°C, ample for use in the British summer time. The sleeping bags are washing washable and can be tumble dried. The North Face Pyxis, Scorpio and Orion sleeping bags can be found at outdoor retailers nation-wide
