Call me childish, but the term “bumbag” never fails to elicit a snigger, and not just because it sounds so ridiculous. It appeared in his eponymous line as well as in his collection for Louis Vuitton (above) as a tasselled hip-hovering beast. Along with clogs and cycling shorts, bumbags form part of the jolie-laide movement in fashion, which even the high street is intent on supporting. Marks & Spencer will launch a studded leather-effect version, for £15, in May, while American Apparel offers shiny gold “fanny packs” – as our neighbours over the pond delightfully call them – for £15. “I can see cool kids in Dalston wearing them,” says Gaia Geddes, executive fashion and jewellery editor of Harper’s Bazaar. “It’s a fun trend, but I don’t think anyone over 25 will buy into it in a big way. It’s a tribute to Marc Jacobs that he can even make the bumbag seem so covetable.”
